September 2015 Meeting Minutes


Date of meeting:  September 3, 2015

Members Present:  Polly, Gayle, Helen, Judy, Tony, John, Bren, Larry, Ann, Jay, Charles, Faye, Elysabeth, Linda, Howard

Guests:  Sally Handley, Jonathan Kirsch, and Gail McAbee

Business Issues:  Discussed the bylaws and to start thinking of changes for upcoming January meeting; bylaws will be emailed to everyone.  Minutes from August meeting read and unanimously approved. 

Member News:  Charles was a finalist in the Golden Donut 200 word contest.

Program:
·        Speakers:  Ben Matthews and wife
·        Topic:  Writing process
- wrote first novel (Pursuit of Justice) during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo or NaNo) – only wrote about 36,000 words
- sent to Kirkus for review
- used editorialdepartment.com for editing advice
- inspiration was a case he tried about 25 years ago
- classifies it as kind of a cozy – setting is Myrtle Beach
- enjoyed rewriting the best even though he is terrible with description as this process helped him really get to know characters and add in description as needed; does not give racial attributes to characters and allows reader to come to their own conclusion leaves with question and follows up with book club discussion questions – to make reader think about what they read
- spent 6 years creating first novel; is working on second
- has been practicing law for 30 years; in SC not called prosecutors but solicitors
- suggested reading The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
